The value of alerts

I noticed VRX was making new highs and I was about to go long but then it started to falter a bit. So in cases like this I like to put an alert just under the high. I don't have to watch it so I'm free to concentrate on other stocks. When the alert goes off, probability says the trend will continue so I immediately get into the trade.
